❥ TODAY WAS THE DAY. Dustin was finally going to begin his journey and he was well on his way to his first step. Taking a deep breath, the small trainer stepped out onto the route and paused, picking up the pokeball with his starter pokemon inside. In his arms, he held the egg he had found, holding it tight in his excitement and crouching down. He called out Inferno, smiling at the small mouse pokemon who appeared before him. A small yawn escaped the nervous pokemon who stretched upon being called out, looking up at his new trainer. "Oh. Is it time to start already?" He asked softly as Dustin tilted his head.
"Dustin wants to make sure you know how to understand him in case something happens in battle!" Starlight jumped down to translate as Dustin began to teach the mouse pokemon how to communicate with him. He started with a few simple signs, hoping that Inferno would follow along. The small pokemon seemed so determined earlier but now...now he seemed nervous. Signing quickly, Dustin pet Inferno's head.
"Dustin said it's okay if you don't pick it up right away. It might take some time. For now, let's learn battle commands! What moves do you know?" Starlight sat down on the ground beside Dustin who smiled at Inferno happily. "I..I know three moves. I know tackle, leer, and covet." Inferno smiled shyly, trying to brighten his flames for Dustin. Dustin, however, simply ran his hand over Inferno's head, nodding. He held up his left index finger, as if signaling one. "That move will be tackle!" Starlight explained at Inferno nodded. "Don't worry Inferno. If I can help, I'll call out the moves for Dustin!"
This continued for a few minutes as they talked back and forth, Dustin finally picking up his starter carefully and nuzzling against his nose. Inferno blushed a bit and smiled, rubbing his head. "I think I get it!" He sighed happily, being set down as Starlight was picked up next and set on Dustin's shoulder. "Dustin won't give up on you so you shouldn't give up either! We'll make a great team!"
Dustin nodded in agreement and stood up, stretching out slightly. This was only the first few steps. He couldn't let his silence stand in his way. Right now, right here, Inferno and Starlight trusted in him...and he wouldn't let them down! He smiled down and allowed Inferno to walk with them as they began walking forward, ready to take on the day.
He was in quite the foul mood, the old Krokorok. There were too many wanderers were traveling along the road, and he was getting quite sick and tired of it! He had to come up with a solution fast. As the self-proclaimed guardian of this route, these "trainers" were going one step too far. But what was an old grouch like him to do? Trainers were much bigger than most of them, and they had all those viciously tamed Pokemon on their side. Had those red and white balls that they called a home. He wouldn't have any of it, though, so he had stationed himself on the side of the road, close to the ground to hide himself in the grass so that the very next trainer he saw wouldn't spot him ahead of time.
And luckily for him -- or maybe unfortunately? -- one appeared. Oh he was going to get him good, he was! As soon as they got close, the old Krokorok lunged forward out at him, using a quick Rage! "Go away! You're not welcomed here!!!" As soon as he did, initiating what he at least considered a battle, his ability, Intimidate came into play, affecting the nearest Pokemon, which was probably Inferno.

❥ ALL WAS GOOD AND FINE as they walked down the pathway to the next route. Dustin, Starlight, and even Inferno were all smiling as they marched forward, not even noticing the near by threat until it was to late! Hearing the voice and seeing Inferno stumble over as he was struck, Dustin turned to look, frowning and stepping forward. "Dustin! Be careful! This pokemon is clearly not pleased! We need to battle!" Nodding in response to Starlights warning, Dustin signed.
"Get up Inferno! We believe in you! This is our first battle together so let's do this!" Starlight translated smoothly for Dustin as Inferno turned over onto his feet, giving the frightening Krokorok a nasty leer and rising his flames up as high as possible. "S..Says you! We're just passing through here!" He tried to sound confident but he was shaking as Dustin began to sign. "Don't worry Inferno! We got this! Use Covet!" Starlight nuzzled against Dustin who looked nervous, nodding a bit. He didn't like seeing Inferno hurt but this pokemon had to learn a lesson! This Route belonged to everyone! Not just him!
Inferno didn't hesitate as he ran forward, putting his trust in his trainer. He dashed out, lunging at Krokorok and trying to steal any items he may have (to no avail since he was empty handed) while attacking the older pokemon.

The Krokorok was really not pleased. This was their land! Not these darn humans who just wanted to capture them all for their own amusement! He wouldn't let this slide! He was going to be a strong Krokorok and protect all of the little ones! But first that meant taking out this trainer and his brainwashed Pokemon! Yes! The first step was preventing this male from ever doing this again!!! He would save them all! He swore it!
So he was up against a Rogue Cyndaquil, was he? That would be a piece of cake! He stood up straight and crossed his arms defiantly, confident this youngster wouldn't be able to land a punch. This Cyndaquil had nothing on him! -- Of course, that was his thought process up until the little thing attacked him. He went tumbling backwards in the dirt until he stood up shaking some. "Oh that does it!" Turning around he quickly kicked sand up into the Cyndaquil's face with a quick Sand-Attack before flipping around and lunging to give him a quick Bite just to be on the safe side!

❥ SEEING INFERNO LAND A HIT made Dustin feel a bit better as he watched his starter jump back. Maybe they really could do this in the end? He smiled a bit...until Krokorok used Sand attack, making Inferno stumble back and whine as sand got in his eyes and a snap latched onto his side, even with his stumble having brought him almost out of reach of the other. Had he been closer, he would have been faced with the brunt of the attack but it didn't save him very much. "Oh no!" Starlight almost jumped down to run to his side, Dustin almost willing to let her. However, he knew Inferno had faith in him...so he had to help out Inferno...Inferno HAD to win this fight!
Signing quickly, Starlight stumbled to catch up. "Quick! Inferno, jump back and kick up as much dirt as you can!" It was a dusty path so if Inferno did it just right...
The Cyndaquil did so, jumping back and kicking up dirt quickly, even pawing at it to throw some more into the air. Soon enough, an almost cloudy effect began to consume the battlefield, causing Starlight to sneeze a bit. She kept a close eye on Dustin's hands however, calling out when she saw movement. "Use the dust as a cover! Run in and use Tackle and follow it up again before he can escape!" Inferno realized Dustin's plan, nodding in reassurance before dashing to the side and running forward. Krokorok wouldn't be able to see where he was but if he didn't move from his spot, Inferno would know where Krokorok was!
Inferno's dim flames would make him harder to spot and with all his might, Inferno ran forward with a might tackle. He jumped back once he made the first collision, rubbing at his eyes to get some of the sand out to no avail before dashing to the other side of Krokorok and running forward for another strong tackle.
"YOU CAN DO IT INFERNO! WOOHOO!" Starlight cheered over the pitter patter of Inferno's feet, excited to see her little friend fighting so passionately. She bounced a bit on Dustin's shoulder as Dustin held his breath, hoping this plan would work. He noticed Inferno ducking back out of the dust cloud, shaking his head a bit and blinking rapidly.

Finally pulling off of the Cyndaquil and jumping back, the Krokorok gave a smug smirk, completely satisfied with what he had done. That would teach the Cyndaquil! He wouldn't let these rascals take over his route! Enough was enough! Tapping his feet on the ground, he prepared for another Bite or Rage, but that would be when he would be caught off guard. When the strange little pink Pokemon started shouting orders for the trainer -- seriously, why was it doing that? -- things would start to take a turn for the worse on his end. Suddenly the Cyndaquil to kick up the dirt around them, seriously messing with his eye sight. The thing was like a mole or something. It just kept digging at the ground and kicking dirt and dust everywhere!! He couldn't even see him! This would be a serious problem!
He was prepared to blindly charge forward when the tackle suddenly hit him in the side, causing him to stumble away. He cursed angrily at it, but before he could even properly react, another tackle hit him from the other side! He was not liking this at all! He was completely off guard and fell to the side. However, he wasn't just going to sit here! He quickly jumped off and lunged in the last direction that he knew the Cyndaquil was for another Bite!

❥ INFERNO FINALLY OPENED HIS eyes a bit, a red ring showing the stress they were under from the sand. Groaning, the small pokemon shook off once more and stared into the dust with a frown. Was...was he really doing alright? Looking over to Dustin for a glance, he saw the determined look in his eyes and nodded, getting ready to attack one more time. Taking a deep breath, Inferno stared at the dust cloud, seeing nothing until...WOAH! He just barely managed a leer when he heard Starlight's voice.
"LOOK OUT!" Starlight cried as Inferno scrambled a bit, this time taking the full brunt of the attack with a cry. Seeing Dustin in the corner of his eye holding up three fingers, the fire pokemon used the close proximity of the elder pokemon to his advantage and used covet. Dustin bit his lower lip as Inferno readied a second Covet, ready to strike his opponent over and over if he didn't let go!
"I..I'll show you!" He cried out nervously, flailing a bit in the ground types jaw.

Well this was it. He had completely failed everyone in this route. When managed to latch on he was pleased, but when the leer hit him, he knew he was screwed. He clamped his teeth down harder before starting to pull away, but it was still too late. The covet managed to hit him just as well, and the Krokoro fell to the ground with a painful huff. He just laid there now, staring up at the sky way above him, a feeling of shame deep in his stomach. He was a failure to the Pokemon of this route. These trainers were going to take over, and all of the little children here would be taken away and it was all his fault for failing... Oh the woe....
"I....give up." the Krokorok said. He didn't really want to be knocked unconscious, and at this point, when he could hardly move, he didn't feel like attacking the Cyndaquil when he could have. So, he gave up. There was no more point in fighting. He had failed in his only mission.
From all the dirty that Cyndaquil had kicked up, several shiny coins had been dug up. It seemed it was a money lost by some trainer a while ago.

❥ HEARING THE POKEMON GIVE UP , Inferno pulled back, blinking a bit before smiling and running to Dustin. Dustin sighed in relief, smiling and patting Inferno on the head. "I did it! I really did it!" He seemed delighted he was able to help his trainer, disappearing into his pokeball happily. Starlight sighed in relief as well...that is until Dustin moved forward and sat next to Krokorok! "What are you doing?" She asked in a panicked tone, squeaking slightly as she stared down at their opponent. Dustin simply moved slowly, setting the egg down beside him gently and digging through his pockets. He found what he was looking for (an old water bottle he had been sipping from and some small band aids meant for small cuts) and got to work.
He knew it wasn't much but none the less, Dustin poured some water on any sandy wounds he could find, patching them up to the best of his ability. He paused, signing to Starlight. "He said you shouldn't jump out and attack like that! Everyone has a right to use this route just as much as you do." Starlight nodded a bit in agreement, watching Dustin finish up. "Dustin doesn't have much but this should help keep you healthy until you recover!" She watched Krokorok carefully still, not quite trusting him as Dustin moved to stand up, picking up his egg. If he attacked, she would do a quick distraction so they could get out of there.
Besides, Dustin had to head back quickly to heal Inferno so the small pokemon could feel better as well. Turning his back so that he could head the way he came, Dustin smiled down at the Krokorok, waving sadly. If he thought the Krokorok would want to come, he'd have no problems catching him...but he didn't seem to like people...
Krokorok laid their silently. He expected them to just leave him there, or capture him and keep him in one of those balls those Trainers always carried around. But that didn't seem to be the case. Much to his surprise, the young trainer came over and started tending to his wounds. Now this was definitely a shocker. He'd never heard of a human doing that. There were those weird Pokemon Centers where they were magically healed somehow, but a human tending to a Pokemon's - who they had just fought the moment before - wounds was something unheard of. At least to him.
So he laid there staring at the trainer in silence, not saying a word, but not moving either. When the bird started to speak, he turned his head to face him and frowned at him. But these humans all just took other Pokemon's friends and families, forcing them to stay inside of those small little prisons. But this human had helped him and wasn't catching him... Maybe... Just maybe, he was different than the others he had seen.
He carefully pushed himself up to his feet, shaking from his wounds, and looked at them. "But why... Why would you help me when I attacked you?" he asked him. He didn't understand the man's reasoning, but he wanted to know. He wanted to know why he hadn't captured him...
Of course this was all until, out of no where, a shrill screaming was heard. "RUN! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! IT'S NOT SAFE! IT'S NOT SAFE HERE! THE BEAST HAS AWOKEN! EVERYONE RUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!!!!!!" And that was when the small little oddly-colored Cherubi suddenly smacked RIGHT into Dustin as if she had never seen him standing there. "Ooof! What are you doing?! Run you idiot!!"

❥ SIGHING IN SILENCE AS he watched the older pokemon struggle to get up. Dustin clicked his tongue (one of the few sounds he could make as it didn't use his vocal chords) and tilted his head. He pulled back, certain that the pokemon no longer wanted his assistance and instead, signing to Starlight so he could respond to the others question. "He says that even if you attacked us, we fought back! So this is the least we can do to make up for it! Dustin doesn't like seeing pokemon hurt so if you want, you can leave but let Dustin finish patching you up!" Dustin smiled slightly, a shy blush creeping along his cheeks.
He seemed about to sign once more until a small pokemon bumped into him, making Dustin blink in surprise. Quickly reaching out to pet the leaves on the oddly colored Cherubi, he tilted his head, bouncing his shoulder to get starlights attention. "oh! oh right! Are you okay? Whats going on?" She asked quickly as Dustin looked back and forth between the older pokemon and the younger one. What was going on???
He held the egg a little tighter, taking a deep breath. What was Cherubi running from? And why?
